A retreat is a place you go to get away from everyday life and refresh your mind and body.
When the unusual times we are living in make you tired,
all you have to do is to get away from everyday life.
One way to do so is to take a step into this garden.
Here you can feel close to nature in an urban setting,
and get away from your everyday self for a change.
Instead of focusing on yesterday or tomorrow,
shift your attention to the moment in front of you that is today.
Any feelings of disquiet you have will fade, and you can start afresh.
In this garden, every individual can find freedom in their own way.
Clear your mind of everything, and enjoy a pleasant time here.

Sky & Moon Hills Area

It is said that since ancient times, people have based the rhythm of their life on the cycles of the moon.
Nowadays, where the cycle of daily life is prone to being disordered, perhaps feeling the presence of the moon may help to restore natural rhythms.
Spread out around the lawn, you can find 16 small hills with a moon design.
In the daytime you can spend your time in any way you please as you gaze at the expansive sky above the city.
At night, lights display the shape of the moon on the day.

Tree Shade Area

This garden hosts a diverse range of flora that one does not normally encounter in a city.
Being among trees during the time you spend in an urban setting is a precious experience, so go ahead and enjoy a break under the cover of the trees. Getting away from everyday life, getting close to trees and feeling the heartbeat of plants and greenery can bring about modest changes in people. Sit on log chairs by the tables attached to the trees, and experience a comfortable breeze blowing between the trees.

You can also find out about floras that you wouldn’t normally notice from the information displayed on the trees.

Autumn Breeze Area

In the lawn that lies before 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, a breeze blows from between the buildings.
Experience this breeze as sound, a sound that is sure to soothe you. Kurogane wind chimes that are made of Nanbu Tekki iron from Japan’s Iwate Prefecture enrich the ambiance of this area. Whereas summer wind chimes produce a type of translucent harmonic sound, the insect-like tones of these chimes invoke the feeling of the transition to autumn.

Iida Dakotsu, a haiku poet from the Meiji Period to the Showa Period, expressed the coming of autumn in a haiku that roughly translated goes “the black iron of, the wind chime in the autumn, sounds out a ringing”.
