Hāloanakalaukapalili

Hāloanakalaukapalili

The Story of Hāloanakalaukapalili is a Hawaiian origin story of the first Hawaiian and his older brother who became the first kalo plant. Kalo or taro is very significant to Hawaiian people. This story is connected to a way of life that Hawaiians follow, which is if you take care of the land, your brother, then he will take care of you. I chose to make my design about this story because to me kalo is a symbol of sustainability and of children. It takes 9 months for a plant to be ready to be harvested, just like a human baby to be born. I think of each kalo plant as a child and after cultivativating kalo myself, I realized the process is just like raising a child, it isn’t an easy task and takes a lot of care, time, and consideration, but it gives many rewards. It is important to remember that in order to ensure prosperity for future generations, we must first take care of our Earth as if it were a part of our family, our brother, our mother, our child. 【Created in 2020】
