To West going to / back

Chiaki Yamamoto

To West going to / back

During the late Edo period, residences belonging to people from the Choshu Domain were confiscated or demolished by the shogunate government as part of a punitive expedition against the region. Following this, the victims walked all the way back to Choshu (now Yamaguchi Prefecture). On the other hand, the artist walked from Gunma, where her family home used to be, all the way to Yamaguchi Prefecture, where she currently resides. The demolition of homes, and walking. This work contrasts people who share elements in common across time.

[Material] A 12-foot timber, video, notes, things used when walking, tarpaulin, and a single pipe

Highlights

The artist continues to try to walk an extraordinary distance while carrying a 12-foot timber. Imagine her journey as though you're enjoying meeting her along the way.

strip of memory

Sumire Funakoshi

strip of memory

Think of "memory" as a single strip that forms a link stretching forward unbroken from the past. The artist drew sequences of scenes from her memory on a strip, then cut them out and rearranged them to recreate memory's uncertain mutability. At the same time, the accidental connections between colors and forms will evoke in the mind of each beholder unique new scenes, reflecting memory's diverse forms.

[Material] Oil on canvas

Highlights

This painting is displayed flat like a single street, so it can be viewed from various angles. Adjust your viewpoint freely, and find scenes that suddenly stand out.

seek

Yumiko Wada

seek

The artist has woven lace from hair extensions to create designs of insects and flowers. Hair extensions are things that fulfill a desire to transform. This work uses them to create lace, a symbol of wealth. Evoking images of insects and flowers seeking the light, it reminds the beholder of how humans instinctively seek beauty and social superiority.

[Material] Hair

Highlights

Made from human hair, the lace also looks like the human mind itself given form. See what images emerge from this translucent work for you.

From outside on the other hand

Satoshi Kawata

From outside on the other hand

The artist has created a "mural" with pieces of molded galvanized iron sheets and other materials of various shapes. Dotted with many different textures and touches, the multilayered canvas questions the relationships between the inside and outside of people's living spaces, and the seen and unseen.

[Material] Wood, linen, Jesmonite, sand, metal, pigments, and synthetic resin paints

Highlights

The mural creates an unusual atmosphere, as if the outdoors has been brought inside the room. Feel both the presence of the entire work, and the details that give glimpses of layers of various textures.

Still Life?

Kai Sano

Still Life?

Using cracked concrete and grainy charcoal, the artist depicted a living room where a family gather. The COVID-19 pandemic has robbed living rooms of their function as places of relaxation, and is causing their existence as safe zones to falter. This work represents such a room, and asks what circumstances we find ourselves in now.

[Material] Concrete, charcoal, and wood

Highlights

It harbors a vaguely fragile image formed by the charcoal and the cracks in the concrete. The work asks what zones are safe for us.

strings

Yoichi Sakamoto

strings

This work is formed from two simple strings.
Moving their ends up and down with a motor produces waves, which in turn produce complex patterns like the surface of water. Using strings you can't fully control, the work creates a new landscape that emerges from between what you can control and what you can't.

[Material] Motors, devices, pulleys, rubber, elastomers, and fishing lines

Highlights

Enjoy the depth, breadth, and myriad expressions created by two strings whose ranges of motion, time difference, and speeds are controlled.
