Skirt

Skirt

Skirt, a self-proclaimed “unfit pop band”, has garnered acclaim for a sound that blends a touch of melancholy with refreshing, breezy songwriting and tight band interplay, and earned a devoted following across professions, genders, and generations. Started in 2006 as Wataru Sawabe’s solo project, the band initially focused on home recording and multi-track production. In 2010, Sawabe launched his own label, Kachuka Sounds, and released the band’s first album, S.O.S., marking the beginning of its full-scale musical activities. In April 2021, the band collaborated with PUNPEE on ODDTAXI, the opening theme for the eponymous Japanese anime TV series about a taxi driving walrus. Known for his encyclopaedic knowledge of comedy, in September 2023, Sawabe served as a judge for the final round of the UNDER 25 OWARAI CHAMPIONSHIP, a comedy competition for performers 25 and under, and wrote the event’s theme song, Kitai to Yokan.
The band has contributed music and scores to numerous anime, films, and television dramas. Its distinctive songwriting has also led to songs being written for artists including Takashi Fujii, Kaede (of Negicco), Toko Miura, and Moka Kamishiraishi a.k.a. adieu.
As a multi-instrumentalist, Sawabe has also performed and recorded with artists including Spitz, Makoto Kawamoto, and Moonriders. His genre-defying work continues to attract attention, showcasing the remarkable versatility of both Sawabe as a singer-songwriter and the band as a whole.
